Long absence from posting, due to silly work pressures. Anyway, 2 weeks in the Alps in August resulted in completion of the Haute Route (across the glaciers, Chamonix to Zermatt), and summitting Mont Blanc, from the “esoteric” Italian Route (14 hours). Pic below is me, Rob, and Brydie on the summit, 8.45am. More to come.

Haute Route and Mont Blanc

What better way to spend your birthday than on the top of a Munro in a few inches of November snow, 45 mile-an-hour winds, and with good friends… Weather conditions “fresh”. As Billy Connolly once said (and Andy B reminded me), “there’s no such thing as bad weather – just the wrang clothes”. The first picture’s on the summit.
Glas Tulaichean on Saturday – we followed something vaguely similar to this route. Sunday was up Mount Blair, from where you get great views of the Eastern Highlands – the second picture is looking North to Glas Tulaichean. We could also see Ben Macdui (25 miles) Schiehallion (29 miles) and Beinn A Ghlo (14 miles). Very cool indeed.

Another superb French film last night, “The Beat that my Heart Skipped” (De Battre Mon Coeur S’est Arrêté). It’s about a guy caught up in a seedy life who tires to escape through using his talent as a pianist. You can read a review here. Excellent and unsentimental treatment of the darker side of life. It reminded me a bit of Ken Loach’s “My name is Joe” which is one of my favourite movies.
